About Kuukpik Corporation

There are well over 250 shareholders enrolled with Kuukpik Corporation.  While the main focus of the corporation as a business is to provide a return to the shareholders in the way of dividends, we also are able to provide other benefits which include employment opportunities, training programs, medical & funeral assistance, college scholarship offerings, and more.

Our business interests and activities consist primarily of oil support services; drilling, catering, security, ice road construction & maintenance, seismic & engineering, and cargo transportation.  Other ventures include housing maintenance contract services, operation of air monitoring stations, and real-estate property leasing.

Nuiqsut, home to the Kuukpik Corporation, is located approximately 8 miles from the Alpine oil field. This field is the largest on land discovery of oil in North America in over a decade and is the first North Slope oil discovery on Native owned lands since ANCSA. The Kuukpik Corporation owns the surface rights to portions of the oil field, and receives a small royalty from the production of oil and gas.

As the first Native Village to be impacted in this way by the oil industry, the Kuukpik Corporation was able to successfully negotiate a comprehensive Surface Use Agreement. The agreement established provisions for education, training, preferences in contracting, employment, and the environment. All state and federal environmental standards were incorporated by reference into the agreement, as well as the environmental standards and stipulations developed by the Kuukpik Corporation.

Prior to the discovery of the Alpine oil filed, Nuiqsut was primarily a subsistence based economy. Subsistence remains the integral way of life for the Inupiat people of Nuiqsut, and so as part of the Surface Use Agreement, the Kuukpik Subsistence Oversight Panel was created. This panel provides ongoing local input and oversight for the protection, promotion, and health of the subsistence resources in the area.
